What's in a name?

I have been meaning to publish this post for a while now but have just kept adding and adding to it...therefore it may need to be read in multiple sittings.  Again, all of this is for the purpose of documenting for Baby Girl so...here we go...

We have had this name picked out for quite some time and I am absolutely in LOVE with it.

Suzanna Grace Moore

Try it...with a deep southern accent.  I melt!  We are going to go with the full double name, Suzanna Grace.  Not Suzanna, not Grace (though both alone are still beautiful)...and no, Geoff and Reno, not Sue...beautiful Suzanna Grace.

First of all, I have prayed for this season of life for as long as I can remember.  Praying that the good Lord would bless us with children and that God willing somewhere in the mix there would be a daughter (and then maybe another so that she can have a sister...)

Suzanna is in honor of my mother and her SuSu, Suzanne.  I have the Anne in my name because of ole Suzanne and was actually born on her 28th birthday.  While Suzanna Grace will miss the shared birthday she will have that special tie to her maternal grandmother.  What an honor for Kyle and me to be able to name our daughter after such an outstanding woman.  She is one of if not THE most selfless, Godly, and positive people that I know.  My Momma, y'all, she is the oldest of 5, mother of 4, and dear friend to all.  She has taught me everything that I know about being kind and motherly to everyone.  When I go back home and someone realizes that I am "Mrs. Ray's daughter" they tear up with a story of how special she has been in  their child's life as their teacher or in their own personal life.  She is quite popular...and for such special reasons. She has never met a stranger.

She chose to stay at home with four kids for 15 years and has told me before that during that time we lived on love, though we would have never known it.  She was Pinterest before there was Pinterest, using cookie cutters to make boxed ice cream into the shape of hearts for a Barbie themed birthday party...creating timeless matching, handmade outfits for my siblings and me for every holiday from birth until my pre-teen years...and the list goes on.

We (MA, Rob, and Duff) thought that we were the luckiest kids in the world because we had a backyard that was perfect for slip and slide parties, a pool that we lived at during the summers right there in our neighborhood, and then later a front yard that hosted a pond with lots of fish and a paddle boat.  My Momma drove the same station wagon until the pedometer flipped back to 0 (this is no joke...we have it on VHS) and then the same big blue van that carted 20+ teenagers each Friday all around Madison until the air went out and the windows stopped rolling down/popping out. She only decided that she HAD to get a new vehicle when I got engaged and she realized that MA and I would have to ride around in the hot van when we came home for wedding planning.

My Momma and Daddy have sacrificed our whole lives for us to be able to know what blessings really are and that the simple things are the best things.  I could not think of a more perfect name to give our first born as we pray that we will be able to emulate these teachings in our own parenting.
Rob shared this version of "Oh Suzanna" with us over Thanksgiving and I cannot stop listening to it.  A dear friend, Krista Shows, was learning to play the guitar and was just playing around when she recorded it but I think it's beautiful.

Grace is in honor of Kyle's dad, Mr. Jim, and in memory of his late mother, our Grandmother Grace. Though I did not have the privilege of  spending much time with her, Kyle has memories of her playing poker with her grandsons in the back of their camper and their time together every Christmas.

Most important to us is that Grandmother Grace is the woman who raised our Suzanna Grace's Big Jim, a man who we admire more than words can express.  He, along with Kyle's Mom, have supported us in all that we have ever done.  When Kyle got the opportunity to play soccer at Northwestern they both spent tireless hours doing research, saving for, and encouraging him to venture out to Chicago.  Growing up, Kyle says that he remembers his Dad coming straight from work, changing in the car, and watching or coaching every soccer game he and his brothers ever played. That in addition to working tirelessly as a lawyer to support their family of five.
Something that I too love about our Big Jim is his love for spending time with us, his family. I have spent many, many family vacations with The Moore's and have enjoyed the adventures that he takes us, and really whichever friends want to go, on throughout the years. Whenever we are together, Kyle and his brothers, to this day, spend hours telling stories about these trips.  We know that this love for your family is first instilled by your mother which is, again, a reason for our wish to honor Big Jim through our "Grace".
When it comes to words of wisdom, we have quoted and lived by Big Jim sayings and so have our friends.  As I was starting grad school he told me, "Two years is going to pass no matter what...in the end you'll either have your masters or you won't but the time will still pass..." He told the same thing to Kyle as he contemplated his decision to start at Kellogg.  Such an obvious statement, yet so true and exactly what we needed to hear and be reminded of.  When my sweet and modest Kyle decided to move jobs and received a heartfelt and encouraging email from his former boss I forwarded it on to Mr. Jim.  He replied with how proud he was of BOTH of us, reminding me that behind every successful man is the woman who has and continues to support him.  He also went on to remind me that his father had three kids while he put himself through graduate school and that Kyle and I could do this same.  Just like his other suggestions and boosts of confidence, I took those words to heart and told Kyle that it was time to start our own family.
That Big Jim is so excited about his sweet GrandGIRL and we pray that we will continue to learn from he and Mrs. Jeane about what it means to love unconditionally and raise Suzanna Grace in the ways that they have found so successful.
When choosing a name, we wanted something beautiful and a little different, a name that everyone would know without having to ask her last name, though she will be proud of "MOORE" too.  We wanted to choose names that would honor those most important in our lives and, soon, our children’s too.  Whenever we daydream about our Suzanna Grace  we picture every good quality possessed by Kyle and me, as well as by her grandparents, aunts, and uncles.  We see her being a friend to everyone...never meeting a stranger and making everyone feel that they are friends with her, because they are.  We see her as being a tomboy but also a girlie girl...a perfect blend of a carefree bohemian spirit and a type A personality.  We picture a kind-hearted little girl with  precious little angel kisses across her nose and slightly wavy hair.
She will be, in our eyes, perfect.  Sure, she'll get into a little trouble here and there and she'll throw a fit or two in front of large crowds...she'll probably even embarrass US by doing things that we once said, "My child will NEVER do..." but our precious daughter will be our first...our learning experience.  We will make mistakes with her too...but we will live and learn and rejoice in each day that the Lord gives us to be her parents.  While she is still "cooking" she has already blessed us in more ways than words can even express.  She has already changed our lives.

Most importantly, our Suzanna Grace will be loved unconditionally, taught to love Jesus, and to treat others as herself because that is what her name sakes have taught us.
===============================================================================

When I first found out that we would be welcoming Baby MO into this world I moved all of my "Baby Names" from the Notes app on my phone into a Google spreadsheet (OCD?) and created the following headings: Name, Rationale (family significance, origin, etc), Initial Thought, and After [thinking about it for a while]. A lot goes into a name and, let's be honest, it sticks with you for your whole life...being the first thing that people know about you. They did a study in that book Freakanomics where they end up finding that your name does not have the greatest impact on how successful you are but that people have strong opinions about where resumes with "different or unusual" names go after being received.  As my sweet brother in law, Timmy, reminded me, you also have to consider the nicknames, both sweet and ugly, that people will generate from your chosen Baby name.

Bless him, I cannot imagine that our friend Brad Templin's mother would have ever thought that her son would eventually only go by the name: Toes, Taco, Tac Meat, Meat, Templin, or Temple Toes.  I mean goodness his middle name is Axel (a strong contender for Baby BOY Moore by the way Uncle Toes) and that gem of a name isn't even a part of our nickname bank.

Toes, as I so dearly refer to him, is the one with the cap on.  He is by far one of the nicest, most generous, and most caring friends we could ask for.  His nicknames come from such silly and memorable stories.  He is also very accident prone and after taking an eye kick from a girl in an attempt to help me score a soccer goal (fail), he nearly "lost" his eye.  I also spent the evening in the ER with him on the day I found out about Baby MO.
I guess you just have to pray that your child is surround by best friends that care about and love them enough to have fun (and by all means SAFE) stories from which they create said nicknames.

We also had a handsome boy name chosen, and will use it for a future Moore Boy.  As soon as I heard Kyle's Momma say it, I knew that we would call our son by the name... It happens to be a nick-name of Mrs. Jeane's paternal grandfather.  I won't share it just yet because when Baby BOY MO comes a few years down the line, we hope...for Kyle's sake, we will use this name.  It's actually what we, and our families, called Baby MO until we found out that "he" was a SHE.

A few other fun facts about her name:

Suzanna: lily or rose

-In 2012 only 183 girls were named a variation of Susannah.  One site also said that less than 5 boys received the name.  Bless those poor boys' hearts.  That reminds me of the Johnny Cash song, Boy Named Sue.

  • William Shakespeare named one of his daughters Susanna. Kyle says that he always thought he and "Bill" had a lot in common.

  • Nameberry.com: Susannah is by far the most stylish form of the classic name now that Susan and Suzanne have retired. Susannah has biblical and musical pedigrees, is impervious to trends, and has an irresistible, flowing rhythm. It can be spelled just as properly with or without the final 'h.'
  • Susannah is one of the loveliest names that, surprisingly, is not in the Top 1000--and hasn't been since 1978-- though we expect that to change as soon as the memory of too many older Susans and Susies fades.  Susannah and Susanna seem to have traded place over time as the dominant version. How do they differ? The h-less version feels a bit more streamlined and modern, and might refer more directly to an ancestor named Ann or Anna, while Susannah seems more old-school Biblical and self-contained.
Grace: God's Favor and love towards mankind
- People with this name are excellent at analyzing, understanding, and learning. They tend to be mystics, philosophers, scholars, and teachers. When presented with issues, they will see the larger picture. People with this name have a deep inner desire for a stable, loving family or community, and a need to work with others and to be appreciated.
And of course...one of my all time favorite songs.  It reminds me of my PawPaw:

    Week 26 Update

    How Far Along? 26 weeks
I'm not really sure where this came from but since Thanksgiving I have popped!  This was my view of the menu on Tuesday night.  Hello SG!  Mommy LOVES YOU!!

    Size?
    Baby is:

    Maternity Clothes?
I am either going to only wear sweat pants from now on or splurge on some good maternity jeans.  I cannot find any store in my immediate location (Lord help me if I have to go downtown right now) that sale maternity pants.  They all have online sites where you can order them but nothing in store.  I placed a big ASOS order over a week ago...please hurry!  :)

Weight Gain?  Not sure about any gain since the last appointment but I feel good.  And yes, Rob, adding apple juice and OJ does add additional calories if you have not been previously drinking it.  Thank you, Doctor. HAHA.

Look at how much baby girl has grown in 13 weeks!
Stretch Marks? Nope.  Using the Burt's Bees Momma Tummy Lotion twice a day.

    Gender? A precious baby GIRL!

Sleep?  Sleeping really well, thank goodness!  I toss and turn a few times during the night and even in those few moments of being awake Baby Girl is moving or, as Kyle refers to it, "ripping around in there..."

Movement? All the time.  It is glorious and I miss it when it doesn't happen for a little bit.  She should be doing some turning in the next week or so and I am looking forward to those new feelings.

Food Cravings? Nothing. I am loving all of the homemade treats that my students brought in this week!

Anything making you queasy or sick? No, thank goodness.

Labor signs? No!  Still have 14 weeks to go!

Belly button in or out? She's not visible through my clothes but after I workout or eat a lot she kind of looks like a turtle poking its head out. Strange and possibly TMI?

Wedding rings, on or off? On.  I will be really sad when/if the answer to this changes.

    What I Miss? Nothing really.

Symptoms?  A few aches and pains from what I am assuming is stretching and growing.

Happy or Moody? SUPER happy!  I wake up in the morning and say, "Good morning SG...your Mommy loves you...your Daddy loves you...JESUS loves you...and then I go through the names of all of her grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

    Best Moment of the Week?
-Getting to see Little brother Rob Ray and Angela for a few hours before their trip to Alinea.
-All of the new movements from Baby Girl
-Christmas time at my new school.  Oh the love and appreciation that comes from the families and faculty.  I am blessed.
-Dinner with Toes, Reno, and Kyle Friday night and being taken back to old times when it was just us, plus JohnJohn, on Newport Ave.

    Looking forward to...
-Flying into Memphis tomorrow morning to begin working in the nursery bedding.
-Christmas Eve and Day traditions with the Rays, Moores, and Dahlems.
    -Celebrating Jesus' birthday!

Sweet things and Life in General:
I had the privilege of picking up some of my old students from school on Monday and spending the evening with them.  We purchased gifts for some local families in need and LOVED being able to select items for their new home and that we thought they would enjoy playing with together.  These kids y'all, what giving hearts!  Even though they could very well have been in the same boat in terms of being on the receiving end, they spent so much time carefully choosing each gift and making sure that the budget we had to work with provided the most bang for their buck.  We ate a grand meal at the Sonic and then delivered the goodies to our friend Mrs. Dye who, with her husband, runs the non-profit Vision Nehemiah and hosts young men and boys in their home for various periods of time.  We took many pictures and each time they rotated who got to touch the baby.
Suggested baby names: Precious, Miracle, Heaven, Blessing, Dionate, and Alex.

    25 Weeks...Better Late Than Never...

Getting ready for the Coonley Elementary Christmas party...and yes, this will be my go to holiday and winter go-to dress.  In other words...you'll see it again...next weekend, in fact.

How Far Along? 25 weeks as of Friday, Dec. 13.  Y'all, the time is flying!!  We only have 15 weeks left...as my 2nd graders would break it down...thats 8 weeks and then 7 weeks, 11 weeks and then a month, 3.5 months, or in other words...tomorrow.  AH!

    Size?
    Baby is:

Maternity Clothes?  Yes please.  The dress above is a maternity dress from ASOS.  I also have some pants coming from there this week...I think I should be an ASOS spokesperson....
I am still wearing my regular pants with the belly band but my shirts and, really, everything are slowly getting tighter and shorter.  I really look pregnant now and the maternity clothes fit.

Weight Gain? We went to the DR on the 12th and I was up to 131 which is about a 10-13 total gain.  In the past month though, I had gained about 5 pounds or a little more than a pound a week which is what the DR wanted.  She questioned how I had done it, to which I replied that I had started drinking OJ or apple juice in the AM...and Kyle honestly shared that I have been eating a s'more each night after supper.  ;)

Stretch Marks? Nope.  One blue vein on my side but I am hoping that will go away.  I am stretching for sure at this point so using the Burt's Bees Momma Tummy Lotion may go up to 3 times a day.  I also have a dark spot on the side of my face by my ear.  :(  Of course I am the only one who would notice it...Ashlee told me that girls steal your beauty...baby girl, as long as you're happy and healthy, you can have it. :)

    Gender? A precious baby GIRL!

Sleep?  There have been a few nights where I have woken up throughout the night and had to rearrange.  I am now fully surrounded by pillows on both sides.  I have built a fort around myself...Kyle calls it an oven because he says that I radiate heat at night.

Movement? She has really picked up the pace over the course of the week.  I mean ALL THE TIME and sharp, tough kicks and jabs.  She is all over the place in there and it's fun to watch my stomach move with all of her dramatic movements.  I. LOVE. IT.  I was telling Kyle how amazing it is and he said, is that why women have postpartum...because they miss being pregnant?  I am sure that there are many things that go into the baby blues but I can see how women miss the feeling.
She is quite the soccer player...or, as Kyle hopes, is perfecting her golf swing.

Food Cravings? Nothing too out of the ordinary.  Bring on the sweets though!

Anything making you queasy or sick? No, thank goodness.

Labor signs? No!  Still have 15 weeks to go.

Belly button in or out? IN but slowly but surely moving out.  It's getting flatter.  I think that the belly button change has, so far, been one of the top weirdest things about being pregnant.

Wedding rings, on or off? On. Now that it's getting cold my fingers are shrinking...for now anyways.

    What I Miss? Nothing really.

    Symptoms?  Nothing to report.

Happy or Moody? SUPER happy!  I wake up in the morning and say, "Good morning SG...your Mommy loves you...your Daddy loves you...JESUS loves you...and then I go through the names of all of her grandparents, aunts, and uncles.  I have been singing to her, which Kyle requested that I stop, and making up songs for her too.  It's hard to describe unless you have been pregnant but I feel like she is such a part of me (because she is) and I just talk to her all day long.

    Best Moment of the Week?
*Kyle finishing school for the quarter!  Hooray for having him home and free of school work.  He will take 3 class/quarter for the winter and spring quarters so I am going to enjoy every second of him having some time "off."
*Starting to feel baby girl more AND buying an antique dresser for her nursery!
*We also got to spend some time with Uncle JohnJohn and Auntie Meggo when they stopped through Chicago on their way to their honeymoon---we miss them!
*Visiting Park Church and looking forward to going back again :)

Looking forward to... seeing Rob Ray and Angela when they come through Chicago on Thursday, celebrating our Chicago Christmas, including brunch at Little Goat, with my sweet Kyle on Saturday, going home on Sunday for Christmas, helping MA with the nursery bedding and decor... celebrating Jesus' birthday next week.

Sweet things and Life in General:
We had a snowstorm on Saturday so I decided to go ahead and get my dia-be-tes testing done.  It was not nearly as bad as I thought.  I just drank this orange drank and then spent an hour watching Wilford Brimley spoof commercials about diabetes on YouTube:

and addressing Christmas cards.  I got the call today that SG and I are diabetes free.  Hip, hip, hooray!

Toes and Epstein had their Christmas open house and Christmas party over the weekend too.  Kyle and me in front of Toes' MASSIVE tree.

    Gender Reveal Part II

I am sure that folks are sick of seeing these but I wanted to make sure that I documented them for my blog/baby book.  :)  I cannot sing the praises of Jovana loud enough for everyone in Chicago to hear!  I put a little add out on Craigslist and had lots of people respond who were willing to take pictures at the Gender Reveal.  Needless to say many were the equivalent of me taking a bunch of pictures on my iPhone BUT then I received an email from Jovana with a link to her blog.  I was blown away by her talent and am so so glad to have found her.  She will be our go to photographer for the rest of our time in Chicago so just get ready to hear about her often.  (Might I add...she is an art therapist for kids during the day... and that makes me love her even more.)

You can check out even more pictures on Jovana's site: Baby Moore Gender Reveal

Here are a few of my favorites:

We had folks vote on Blue Eyed Queen (girl) or Red Headed Soccer Player (Boy) and take a little gender specific happy with them.  I think that it's safe to say that she will probably be a strawberry blonde, blue eyed soccer all-star and queen.  All of the above for Baby Girl, please.

HOORAY for a baby GIRL!!!  What a beautiful night to celebrate!

And there's our Christmas card picture.

I Love that our SuSu is in the midst of writing "We LOVE you..."

Sweet Sissy voting for a GrandGIRL.  We are slowing taking over in the Moore house!  Those Moore boys, as well as the Ray boys, take such good care of us that I know Baby Girl will be spoiled rotten!

Proving to Michele that Baby Girl is there.

Two of the proudest Southern Grandmothers around!

I am quite positive that both Momma Ray and Ashlee are crying about something.

And that Dave...always yelling and clapping about something.  We can't wait to hear the RAP that he comes up with for Baby Girl.

I LOVE this picture.  I had just started to be able to feel Baby Girl and she was moving around as her Uncle JohnJohn talked to her.  Precious.

Thank you Ashlee for rounding everyone up for the reveal!

    Team "Blue Eyed Girl"

    Uncle JohnJohn with the results!

    Team "Red Headed Soccer Player"
    Including MA via FaceTime

Everyone on the roof for the big reveal...

    Sweet hug from my Momma.

Having Kyle tell me every detail from the sonogram.  How did he know without the tech telling him?  How did he not crack a smile? Was he surprised that it was a girl?  How is he planning to transport his shotgun from MS to Chicago?

Still in shock.  Hip, hip, HOORAY!!!

LOVE this picture.  On the phone with my sweet GanGan back in MS telling her that her 7th great-grandchild will be a GIRL!  Love that I am patting baby girl too.

Re-watching the reveal from the iPhones.

    Proud and excited Chicago Uncles.

Chicago Aunts taking a look through baby girl's 19 week glamor shots.

Texting all their friends and our families.  Making plans for a granddaughter!

So excited to be adding a GIRL!

One of the hand smocked girl outfits that my Momma made.  Remember...we could not have the party until she had finished a hand smocked girl, boy, and gender neutral outfit.

Gender Reveal sign-in with notes for Baby Girl.  What a fun thing for us to look back at and for her to have when she gets older.

The BEST parents and soon to be grandparents!  We are so blessed.

Southern staples at the Windy City Party

My cheeks were sore from smiling SO big!

All of our precious GIRL outfits from our parents.

    Gender Reveal Happies

We cannot wait til March!  Cook, cook, cook baby girl!
Your Mommy loves you, your Daddy loves you, JESUS loves you...you are SO LOVED!
